Reversing Hearing Loss?

What's The Possibility Of Reversing Hearing Loss?

Our inner ear is comprised of thousands upon thousands of tiny hair cells. Noticeable hearing loss starts to take hold when enough of these hair cells die. Unfortunately, dead hair cells cannot be revived. Both adult and pediatric hearing loss are serious problems because they affect billions of people around the world, between the ages of 12 and 35. Don't we have advanced medical equipment? Aren't doctors trained in the field of reversing hearing loss? Frankly speaking, there is no solid cure for hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss, which is the most common type of hearing loss, is permanent. That, however, doesn't mean that hearing loss can't be treated.

Modern Hearing Loss Treatment Methods

  • Treating sensorineural hearing loss

Chances are you might have seen someone wearing a hearing aid before. Hearing aids are different from personal sound amplification products (PSAP) because they are not just devices that make sounds louder with basic speakers, amplifiers, and receivers. Actual hearing aids are significantly more complex than PSAPs as they are tailor-made to the patient's needs. These devices enhance specific sounds that the wearer is unable to hear due to hearing loss.

  • Treating conductive hearing loss

In most cases, conductive hearing loss can be typically cured with the right medication or procedure. Doctors may prescribe a course of antibiotics to reduce ear canal swelling or repair a damaged ossicle through a bone replacement surgical procedure. This type of hearing loss is more related to physical blockages between the ear's interior and incoming sound. Sensorineural hearing loss, on the other hand, is more related to the ear's inner workings. If this intricate system becomes damaged, the effects are often irreversible.

SSHL is an Exception

Also known as Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, SSHL can occur without warning in anyone and it's a form of hearing loss that one fully recovers from. Patients are typically cured in a timeframe of approximately 48 hours with the aid of steroid treatments. You must "watch the clock" when it comes to treating SSHL. If you experience it, seeking a hearing specialist ASAP is of utmost importance.

Does Making Positive Lifestyle Changes Help?

Although there are natural ways to maintain the hearing you do have, they cannot fully restore hearing. These natural methods mainly involve making positive lifestyle changes such as maintaining an appropriate consumption of sound, improving the diet, and exercising on a regular basis. These are all great methods to take care of one's hearing and ears, allowing healthy remaining hair cells inside the ear to pick up more sound.

Since science is always advancing, does that mean reversing hearing loss will be possible in the future, perhaps in the next five or 10 years? Although no one knows, various promising fields might yield some results soon. They include gene therapy, viral therapy, and stem cell therapy. Yes, these potential cures are exciting, but they are only theories and tests at this point. If you or your child has been diagnosed with hearing loss, the best course of action will most likely be using a hearing aid.
